So what is the most important Google tool for affiliate marketers? Is it the keyword tool? The Ad Preview Tool? Google Insights for Search?

All good answers but we’re afraid the actual answer (in our humble opinion :-) ) is the IP Exclusion Tool.

This tool is often overlooked by Search Marketers, but when used correctly can give you a great advantage when improving the performance of your PPC campaigns. You’ll find the IP Exclusion Tool in Google AdWords ‘Opportunites’ tab…

Google AdWords IP Exclusion

When you click on the tool you’ll be asked to add IP addresses that you want to add to your campaigns…(yes, it is really annoying that Google doesn’t allow you to do this on account level and only at campaign level!)

IP Exclusion Tool

You can add a ‘*’ at the end of IP address to allow you a ’wildcard’ which means it will block all the users that are using that initial IP address.

So why is this important?

By excluding  IP addresses you can:

1. Hide from other affiliates if you are in an affiliate bidding war.

2. Hide your ad’s for Search Agencies so they cannot copy your ad copy and wont know if you are taking traffic away from them.

3. Hide your PPC ad from your client. This has two benefits in that your clients staff wont go clicking on the PPC ad when they are looking for the client website and also the online marketing manager won’t be constantly looking at your ad’s and asking you to update ad copy every nanosecond (despite how often you explain to them how Quality Score works! :-) )

So how do I find IP’s to block?

You can find IP’s through many different ways. Our favourites are using the online IP location tools such as IP2 Location (http://www.ip2location.com/default.aspx) or You Get Signal (http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web-server/) or alternatively you can get them from email headers if you can have an email from the person you are wanting to block.

Here’s a few to get you started…

To save you a bit of time hunting round trying to find out everyone’s IP address, we thought we’d give you a few to be starting with…

Nice idea in theory, but what about all the lost revenue from agency employees who might be shopping online on their lunch breaks at work…

The natural ranking ad will still be showing, so employees can click on that to buy products and save the cost of clicking on a PPC ad. (That is providing that your website ranks in P1 for your brand terms, which most sites do.)
